Summer Short, Bright Lights Memories Shine Long

by Renee Ford

As we make our way into September, that feeling of summer slipping by is real. In May, the days and weeks of possibilities stretch lazily out before you, and then boom! Time to go back to school, get out your sweaters and embrace Pumpkin Spice everything.

Summer at Bright Lights feels a lot like that. We spend ten months preparing for five weeks of camp (which is really just 25 days if you’re counting—and trust me, when you’re labeling supplies and untangling lanyards, you count). And then, poof, it’s over.

Now, don’t get me wrong—when you’re in the thick of it, like the day a science experiment erupts in more ways than expected, those five weeks can feel a little longer. But for the most part, camp season flashes by faster than kids can say, “Can I bring home the robot I built?”

And yet, here’s the wonderful paradox: While the weeks go by quickly, the impact lasts far longer. Parents tell us every year how meaningful Bright Lights is for their kids. One parent shared, “Our son had an amazing time. He loved and looked forward to going each day. He was sad on his last day.” Another said, “My student absolutely loved this camp! It was well organized and fun, plus intellectually challenging. Thanks for a great experience!”

This summer, we had over 1,100 students exploring new hobbies, sparking creativity and forging friendships across 107 camps. We even welcomed 59 students from Senshu Matsudo Junior High in Japan, who joined 80 American students for an unforgettable cultural exchange. It was incredible to watch kids who started the week on opposite sides of the globe end it laughing together like lifelong friends.

Speaking of incredible, our camps wouldn’t shine nearly as bright without our enthusiastic teachers and community partners—from places like CK Dance, Swanson’s Martial Arts, Woods Tennis, UNL and Turpin Outdoor Education Center (plus many more). They bring expertise and energy to make each camp unforgettable.

And thanks to the generosity of donors, we were also able to award nearly $33,000 in scholarships, ensuring that students who might not have been able to attend otherwise had the chance to join in the fun. We’re deeply grateful to those who believe in our mission and help make Bright Lights accessible to all.

So yes, the unpacking of supplies feels like it happens only a day after the packing. But those 25 days are packed (pun intended) with moments that last: first-time coders discovering the thrill of programming, budding dancers leaping with confidence, curious scientists asking “what if?” just one more time.

And before you ask—yes, we’re already planning for next summer. That’s the way it goes: blink, plan, sparkle, repeat. So keep an eye on BrightLights.org for updates, and don’t forget to subscribe to our eNewsletter so you don’t miss a single announcement.

Because while summer may be short, the memories—and maybe a few stray craft supplies—last much, much longer.
