No fooling – We have camps available!

by Renee Ford

This is no joke! We still have plenty of spots available in many of our fun, hands-on summer camps for students in grades K-8. Click the links below to read the camp description and visit BrightLights to register. You can also sort by grade and week on our website to refine your search.

Time Travel and Adventure

Does your student have an amazing imagination? Then one of these camps might be just the right fit to keep them engaged and learning this summer:

  • #114 Adventures Through Time for grades 1-2: Travel with Jack and Annie from the Magic Tree House series as they go back in time to visit mummies, hunt for treasure and become mighty dragon fighters.
  • #212 Tremendous Time Travels for grades 3-5: Hop into your time machine to see the moon landing, visit the Titanic before it meets its demise, experience the Nebraska prairie in the 1800’s and observe the Wright brothers’ first flight.
  • #900 Safari Adventures for grades K-1: Grab your pith helmet and binoculars to visit Africa and explore the amazing animals that call the savanna, desert and rainforest home. Transport yourself to Africa using books, music and art to learn how different animals adapt and survive and explore careers that help protect the land and animals.

Weather and Conservation

Future meteorologists and environment scientists will find lots to learn and do in these camps:

  • #120 Exploring Natural Disasters for grades 2-4: Learn facts about different types of natural disasters and create structures to survive the onslaught of nature’s wrath.
  • #126 Weather Warning for grades 3-5: When was the first thermometer made? How does the speed and direction of the wind affect our weather today and tomorrow? Do storm chasers really chase tornados? Learn the answers to these and other questions as you become a weather watcher.
  • #302 Green City Architects for grades 6-8: This is a full day camp, and for good reason. The topic is substantial, and will appeal to problem solvers, future engineers and scientists, and anyone who cares deeply about the environment. The concept of zero waste will be explored, which is a waste-free society where all resources are conserved and diverted from landfills and incinerators. Guest speakers and hands-on activities will guide participants to creating their own concept for a city that has as little waste as possible.

History

Just because something happened “long ago” doesn’t mean it’s boring. These camps present historical information by challenging students to solve problems and think creatively.

  • #122 On the Oregon Trail for grades 3-4: Journey westward on the Oregon Trail and learn about what it took for settlers to survive this difficult trip; from what they could pack to the route they followed. If you enjoy learning through games and crafts, this adventure is for you!
  • #616 Adventure as a Homesteader for grades 2-4: Travel back in time 150 years and follow the life stories of well-known pioneer Laura Ingalls Wilder. There are no stores nearby so you will have to churn your own butter and make your own toys. Forget laptops, you will have to write and learn on a slate. It’s sure to be an adventure-filled week!
  • #708 Fossil Frontiers, grades 3-5: This new camp continues where our younger camp, Diggin’ Up Dinos, left off. Exploration of dinosaurs continues, but participants will sink their teeth into more advanced activities and increased research.
  • #718 I Survived as a Homesteader for grades 4-6: This camp is an extension of camp #616 Adventures as a Homesteader and is intended for older campers. Guided by the life stories of Laura Ingalls Wilder, we’ll see if you have the skills to survive the daily life of a pioneer. What type of chores are you expected to complete? When faced with obstacles like a blizzard, prairie fire or locusts, how will you respond? Could you pick your future job at age 12 and become an apprentice? These are all challenges that will be faced during the week.
